Happy Horse helps beat the pain & reduces anxiety. A calm and focused horse is a Hempstock Happy Horse!
The non-psychoactive components of hemp derived CBD hold many therapeutic properties helping to reduce pain, inflammation, and anxiety in owners, their horses, and all their companion animals (Don't forget to take your CBD as your horse feeds off your emotional energy).
Hemp Derived CBD for Horses: 6 Key Benefits
Reduces Inflammation Hemp derived CBD reduces inflammation and the secondary effects that come with it (pain, stiffness, hesitation). CBD acts as an adenosine reuptake inhibitor, helping to increase adenosine in the brain. The effects on adenosine receptors, particularly the A2A receptor, plays a significant role in reducing inflammation in the body. Additionally, CBD can have a positive effect on the metabolic pathways often compromised in insulin-resistant horses.
Aids Psychological Recovery Horses are renowned for being anxious, and after an injury, they may be even more anxious and reactionary. Feeling pain can make your animal stressed, so relief from the hurt may put them in a better mood. Human consumers of CBD report a general sensation of happiness and decreased anxiety, as such we deduce that CBD has the potential to boost not only your horses’ physical recovery but also their psychological recovery from injury.
Aids in Exercise Recovery Happy Horse may aid muscle recovery in horses that receive a high level of training. Including CBD in your horse’s wellness routine can help them perform better by supporting post-exercise recovery and maintaining appropriate stress levels. CBD in horses is also used to aid natural metabolic processes. Stress from intense exercise triggers the release of several hormones, including cortisol. Excessive secretion of Cortisol can lead to problems like muscle breakdown and weight gain. CBD seems to involve a modulation of the natural rhythm of released cortisol.
Boosts Energy and Provides Protein Even if your horse isn’t injured, Happy Horse treats contain proteins that have benefits many owners and trainers seek. The high protein content of MCT and hemp seed helps your animal develop strong muscles and increases their stamina for high-intensity exercise. It also provides an excellent source of dietary energy while maintaining gut health at the same time.
- Strengthens Bones CBD could strenthen your horse's skeletal structure (Trusted Source). Some experts say it my even accelerate fracture healing, a common injury in horses. By no means is CBD a replacement for veterinary diagnosis and treatment. Please partner with your veterinarian.
Minimal Side Effects One of the main reasons vets recommend CBD for horses is the lack of negative symptoms. The alternative, NSAID dosing, can make your animal nauseous and lead to stomach and digestion issues. The only side effect seen from CBD has been mildly-elevated liver enzymes. This side effect arose only in studies using very high doses; 10-15 times recommended levels. This suggests that, when prescribed properly, many animals can get relief without the problems commonly seen with NSAIDs, like GI upset or liver damage.
Happy Horse CBD Dosing for Horses - Why size does & doesn’t matter
When it comes to medicines and supplements, doses don’t scale at the same rates as animal sizes increase. That’s because larger animals have slower metabolisms than smaller ones. A healthy cat’s heart rate can be 150 to 200 beats per minute; an adult human’s resting heart rate is only 70 to 80 beats per minute; and a typical equine heart rate is only 30 to 35 beats per minute. With his slower metabolism, a horse can operate more efficiently and use less energy to get around. This means the “by weight” dosage of many medicines can be far lower for horses than for humans, cats or dogs. For example, while the CBD dose for easing anxiety in dogs is around 0.1mg per kg body weight, research has shown that a dose of only 25mg of full-spectrum CBD oil helps similar issues in horses — which works out to only 0.05 mg/kg. This means that using CBD can be surprisingly affordable when helping soothe a horse’s nervous system.
When you begin dosing Happy Horse CBD Treats, start low and increase the CBD mg gradually. Starting low allows you to track your horse's symptoms and adjust the dose upward as needed. We have formulated Hempstock's Happy Horse Treats for the typical daily dose for full size horses. However, the treats are easily divided to allow you to start lower and increase as needed. For example, minis should start with 25mg only (1/4th of a treat). The plyable nature of the treat also allows you to use them as pill pockets, a super helpful, customer requested, feature.
According to best practices, the most appropriate dosages for varied sized horses is as follows:
- Minis (400-660 lbs) — 25 to 50 mg [1/4 to 1/2 a treat]
- Full-sized (660-1110 lbs) — 50 to 150 mg [1/2 to 1.5 treats]
- Large breeds (1100-1800) — 100 to 250 mg [1 to 2.5 treats]
Please consult your equine veterinarian for a complete diagnosis of the underlying issues you are hoping to address with a CBD regiment. Your veterinarian will help you create a treatment and action plan to resolve your issues, including CBD as one tool in your veterinarian’s tool box.
Happy Horse Treats Ingredients Overview
Coconut Oil Coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides (MCT) that are easier to digest, absorb and convert to energy than the traditionally used vegetable oils. It’s been reported to assist with ulcers, acidosis, colic and dysbiosis and is particularly helpful for horses on a grain based feed. Coconut Oil is energy dense and yields about 2 times more energy than starch or protein. It gives your horse a readily digestible energy, without the “hotness”.
Hemp Hearts Hemp seeds have very high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, even more than flax and fish oils. With an ideal 3:1 ratio of Omega-3s to Omega-6s you’ll be sure to notice a new shine on your horse’s coat and improved hoof growth. With natural anti-inflammatory properties, and without the side effects associated with other drugs, hemp seeds are a good alternative for recovery.
Apple Cider Vinegar Apple Cider Vinegar works to acidify the stomach for better digestion and absorption of minerals. This can help protect your horse against bacteria, parasites and waterborne diseases. Research has also shown that it can slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, which is helpful for those founder-prone ponies/horses that are sensitive to sugar.
An alkaline environment in the horse’s digestive tract can cause intestinal stones to grow to the point of causing dangerous obstructions. The acidifying effect of apple cider vinegar helps dissolve the enteroliths, or ideally prevent them. This is particularly useful in areas with hard water, or for horses that consume a lot of alfalfa hay.
Both horses and humans alike have benefited from apple cider vinegar to help control arthritis pain and stiffness. When fed daily, apple cider vinegar works to restore pH balance and increase crucial minerals, all of which improves joint health.
Oat Flour Oats are traditionally rich in manganese, molybdenum, phosphorous, copper, biotin, vitamin B1, magnesium, chromium, and fiber. While also containing antioxidants, carbohydrates, and protein.
Oats are a heartier and more filling grain. They contain higher amounts of fat and protein than many other grains. All while being gluten-free! Studies have also shown that oats may help lower blood sugar levels as well as HDL levels.
Steel Cut Oats The vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in steel cut oats can provide important health benefits. For example, the fiber in them helps to lower cholesterol and move food efficiently through the digestive tract. Fiber may also enhance immune function. Steel cut oats are also rich in iron and B vitamins, both of which improve energy levels. In addition, steel cut oats are a low glycemic index food. Research shows that regular dietary intake of oats improves blood sugar levels and lipid profiles.
Black Strap Molasses Contains the most vitamins and minerals out of all types of molasses. Molasses is a good source of iron, selenium, copper and some calcium. These minerals all help maintain healhy bones and prevent osteoporosis.
Molasses is also a decent source of potassium, which promotes healthy blood pressure and helps maintain heart health. Studies in animals indicate that supplementing the diet with molasses can help increase HDL (high-density lipoprotein) levels (Trusted Source). Healthy levels of HDL cholesterol may protect against heart disease and strokes.
Molasses may help stabilize blood sugar levels. One study found that eating it alongside foods that contain carbs resulted in lower blood sugar and insulin levels than simply eating foods on their own (Trusted Source). According to research, blackstrap molasses contains more antioxidants than honey or other natural sweeteners, including maple syrup and agave (Trusted Source). Studies also indicate that these antioxidants may help protect cells from the oxidative stress associated with cancer or other diseases (Trusted Source).
Bottom line: Molasses contains several nutrients documented to provide health benefits. It also contains more antioxidants than other common sweeteners.
SPECIAL NOTE: Can I use CBD in competition? The answer is NO!
In September of 2019, the USEF announced that cannabinoids would not be allowed during competition, and will be added to random drug testing programs.
This ban is actually an early indicator of just how powerful CBD can be for behavioral and pain issues in horses.
However, if you ride competitively in shows that do drug testing, you will need to stop giving your horse Hempstock's Happy Horse CBD Treats 7-14 days before the event. FEI rules are following a similar pattern.
The Kentucky-based Racing Medication and Testing Consortium released a bulletin in February 2019 declaring cannabidiol to be a Class 3b substance with unclear withdrawal times. They also warned about the possible risks of using untested products with unknown concentrations and contaminants -- however, rest easy on this second part as Hempstock 3rd party tests ALL our formulations and we regularly test our soil and water for contaminants. We also practice organic farming and use no pesticides or chemicals on the food and medicine we grow.
